Jeep patents Bronco-like donut doors for the Wrangler

Jeep has received a patent for donut doors that appear similar to a design shown on the Ford Bronco at its 2020 reveal. Ford’s version never made it to production, however, and it’s unclear if Jeep’s design will either.

Like the concept versions shown on the Bronco, Jeep’s donut doors are essentially regular doors with cutouts, providing a bit more protection from mud and weather than tube doors. However, documents first spotted by The Drive show that Jeep applied for a patent in May 2017, so the Stellantis brand isn’t simply copying Ford.

The doors shown in the patent images also look identical to those fitted to the Wrangler Switchback concept, which was unveiled in March 2017. It was one of seven concepts Jeep brought to the Easter Safari in Moab, Utah, that year as part of an annual tradition.

The Switchback was a previous-generation Wrangler JK, but following its unveiling reports circulated that Jeep was considering offering donut doors on the successor Wrangler JL, which hadn’t been revealed at the time. Jeep also brought a prototype Wrangler JL with donut doors to the 2017 Los Angeles auto show.

Jeep reportedly dropped plans to offer donuts doors sometime after that, but apparently continued with the patent application process. Stellantis public relations would not comment on the donut-door patent, but it’s worth noting that automakers often patent things without a specific use in mind.

For now, Jeep offers tube doors as a factory accessory. You can even get them for the Wrangler 4xe plug-in hybrid model.

Roof Rack Technology Just Got Its First Interesting Tweak In A Long Time

Truck YeahThe trucks are good!

Off-road overland outfitter ARB has basically taken GoPro’s best business idea and applied it to roof racks. The company’s BASE rack looks slick and, more significantly, comes with its own ecosystem of accessories. It gives you lots of customization potential; it gives ARB lots of revenue potential.

The BASE (“Build. Attach. Set. Explore.” Sure, why not.) rack system starts with a pretty standard (but elegant) flat plane made of slats. It looks like every other roof rack, though it also looks well-made and robust which is consistent with ARB’s products in general. This company is well-established and everything in its catalog trends toward the higher end of build-quality and price. (You might have also seen bumpers, air compressors, locking differentials, and other overland accessories from ARB. They’re all generally considered pretty solid.)

The BASE rack’s main value proposition, besides build quality, is billed as: “revolutionary dovetail mounting system that makes attaching and removing loads and accessories easier, faster, and more secure.” What that means is that each slat in the rack is effectively “guttered,” so that ARB’s numerous attachment offerings fit perfectly into many little slots for nearly infinite customization options.

The result is that it’s very easy to make your own sweet-looking cargo securing setup on your vehicle’s roof. ARB is also offering light bars, special mounts for popular accessories like high-lift jacks, and many types of side railings. There are way too many options and offered dimensions of all these things to get into here, so if you’re interested, just peek at ARB’s site.

For the record: I’m not a big fan of roof racks in general because of how much fuel economy they suck up and how little weight many SUVs are really supposed to carry on their heads. It’s hard to access roof-stowed cargo, it creates a lot of wind noise, and doesn’t do a tall vehicle any favors for stability. That said, roof racks do look cool. And I recognize that if you want to go boondocking with four people in a 4×4, you sometimes need more gear than can fit behind the second row of seats.

It seems like ARB might have noticed GoPro making a huge range of peripherals designed specifically to work with the little cameras and applied the same logic to roof racks. It’s a great idea, and many overlanders I know are a particular bunch, so many will surely enjoy configuring these racks just so. You can also run cables through some of the rack’s gutters so light hookups could be made to look very clean indeed.

I can’t say all this seamless integration really offers a huge practical benefit over, you know, just strapping junk down to standard rack slats, but the ease-of-use and elegance of design definitely have some appeal.

2021 Ford Bronco 7-Speed Manual May Be A 6-Speed With A Low Gear: Report

Truck YeahThe trucks are good!

A seven-speed manual transmission for the upcoming 2021 Ford Bronco has been reported by a tipster with access to exclusive images of the new truck’s center stack, giving more evidence that Ford really is taking the fight all the way to Jeep’s doorstep. It’s what everybody wanted.

I can’t share the images here, but you can go take a gander for yourself over at The Fast Lane Car. Their tipster sent in an image of what appears to be an as-of-yet unreleased Ford infotainment center stack. The large screen appears to be approximately 12 inches, and it sits above a familiar F-150 button stack.

Here’s more from TFLC:

Our source did provide a clear enough image to make out some of the options you’ll get with the 2021 Ford Bronco by way of the buttons on the center stack. Immediately below the infotainment display (showing what is most likely Ford’s SYNC 4 system), there are buttons for a 360-degree camera system, automatic stop/start and a button to disable the parking sensors. Dual-zone climate control also makes an appearance, as does heated seats. However, ventilated seat buttons aren’t here as they were on the F-150. There does appear to be some blank space on either side for a button, so it may just not be an option on this trim level.

More important than the buttons you’ll be pushing is the TFLC source’s claims about the supposed seven-speed manual transmission fitted on the new Bronco. The prospect of a seven-speed in the new Bronco has been rumored since as far back as fall of 2018.

It may actually be a transmission with six forward gears, and a low gear for crawling, according to the tip. Unfortunately, their tipster didn’t get an image of that somehow, so we have to consider taking their word for it still.

This information does match a PowerPoint slide from the manufacturer of the Bronco’s transmission, Magna, which describes a manual transmission capable of different arrangements, including one with a seventh “crawler” gear. Its standard torque rating is up to 443 lb-ft.

Autoblog points out it could potentially pair well with the Bronco’s rumored 325 horsepower, 400 lb-ft of torque 2.7-liter twin-turbo EcoBoost V6 powertrain from the F-150 pickup.

The new TFLC report also indicates Ford may offer two different tire options, one narrow for street and a larger profile for off-roading, supposedly measuring 255-millimetres and 285-millimetres respectively. The larger width would match the tires on the 17-inch wheels available with the Jeep Wrangler Rubicon, TFLC points out.

Ford planned on already revealing its Wrangler-wrangling full-size Bronco, but the current state of the world has kicked that down the road. Ford previously said the reveal would still take place this spring, and to stay tuned for a date announcement.
