AutoHunter Spotlight: 1950 Ford F1 pickup

Up for auction on AutoHunter, the online auction company driven by ClassicCars.com, is a 1950 Ford F1 pickup that’s steel body remains largely original.

“The first-generation F-Series debuted in model year 1948 in the full-size pickup truck segment, with year-over-year changes occurring through 1952,” AutoHunter says in the truck’s listing. “For 1950, slight design changes were made to the sides of the bed and other aspects of the exterior.”

This 1950 F1 example was the recipient of a body-off restoration in which it received a fresh coat of Meadow Green paint and new wooden bed planks. Additionally, the chrome grille, handles, moldings and badging were refinished.

The interior houses a tan tweed reupholstered bench seat, replacement matching headliner, Meadow Green metal dash, and wing windows.

Under the hood is a 239cid flathead V8 that wears its original oil batch air cleaner and is connected to a column-shifted 3-speed manual transmission.

The odometer shows 1,000 miles, which reflects the mileage driven since the completion of the restoration. Chassis mileage is unknown.

This F1 pickup’s auction ends August 12 at 11:00 a.m. PDT.

GM And Cruise Want Ford To Stop Calling Its Hands-Free Driving Technology “BlueCruise”

General Motors is not happy with Ford’s driver-assistance technology name, Reuters reports. Why? Because BlueCruise, Ford’s tech, sounds too much like GM’s Super Cruise and Hyper Cruise, its own driver-assistance technologies, and Cruise, its robo-taxi service subsidiary.

Both Ford’s BlueCruise and GM’s Super and Hyper Cruise systems are base-level autonomous driving technologies that would allow drivers to lift their hands from the steering wheel while still being alert. These technologies aren’t fully self-driving, but they’re what the SAE would term a level-2 tech, which allows the car to do a little bit of heavy lifting while the driver can relax — while still being alert, of course.

“While GM had hoped to resolve the trademark infringement matter with Ford amicably, we were left with no choice but to vigorously defend our brands and protect the equity our products and technology have earned over several years in the market,” GM said in its statement.

Ford has argued that GM and Cruise’s claim is “meritless and frivolous” because “drivers for decades have understood what cruise control is, every automaker offers it, and ‘cruise’ is common shorthand for the capability.”

Basically, Ford is calling BlueCruise a kind of advanced cruise control, which isn’t totally accurate but also not totally wrong.

GM, on the other hand, has argued that automated driving is definitely not cruise control, so Ford can’t use the word “cruise” to describe it. Because GM got there first. GM is arguing that Ford intentionally named its technology BlueCruise to create a sense of confusion between the brands and to capitalize on all the hard marketing work GM has done.

Ford is still arguing that other automakers have used the word “cruise” for decades to refer to a variety of other technologies and simple acts people engage in behind the wheel.

Ford announced BlueCruise in April of 2021, which will be available in the Mustang Mach-E and F-150 later this year through over-the-air updates at a cost of $600 for three years of service.

Shelby American announces latest version of F-150 super truck

The latest Shelby F-150 has been announced by Shelby American, an all-terrain pickup with towering capabilities and a price tag to match.

With 775 horsepower in the optional supercharged version, the limited-edition Ford has the performance and styling cues of Shelby vehicles in the guise of an off-road super truck.

“The Shelby F-150’s supercharged personality delivers spectacular thrills,” Gary Patterson, president of Shelby American, said in a news release. “It has a new suspension, more power and even more technology. Our performance DNA is strong within this super truck, which gives enthusiasts the opportunity to drive an amazing off-road-capable Shelby right off the dealer showroom floor.”

The four-door pickup, with the standard naturally aspirated V8 producing 395 horsepower, comes with complete heavy suspension updates, including Fox all-terrain shocks like those on the rugged Ford Raptor.   The suspension system allows the truck to be tuned for the street, rock crawling or general off-roading.

The interior has two-tone leather seat covers with Shelby emblems, official serial number and floor mats.  A limited number of the special trucks are planned for the US, and additional units for outside the country. Each vehicle is documented in the official Shelby Registry.

“With the growing demand for our muscle trucks worldwide, we spent the past year carefully improving and engineering our Shelby off-road version of the tough new Ford F-150,” said Vince LaViolette, the company’s vice president of operations. “The refinement designed into it is unprecedented in our history. Building upon the advancements that Ford designed into the F-150, we created the most capable, enjoyable and sophisticated off-road truck to wear the Shelby nameplate.”

The Shelby F-150 will be available at select Tuscany and Ford dealerships.  The starting price is $107,080.  For more information, visit the Shelby American website.

“Continuing with a chassis that debuted in 1941, the 1947 Ford models saw some slight updates from prior years including removal of accent lights from the grille, relocation of the parking lights to below the headlights, and a smoothing of the exterior molding texture,” the auction notes in the wagon’s listing.

This woody wagon’s mostly original wood paneling is accented by black paint and cloth top. It features a two-piece windshield and brightwork on the bumpers, grille, headlight rings and side moldings.

The interior, which appears to be in good shape, houses a black leather bench seat and wooden door panels matching the full headline wood framework. On the black color-matched dash is a modern Kenwood AM/FM/CD head unit that’s connected to three subwoofers found in the rear cargo area.

When you open the hood, you’ll find custom airbrush flames pointing towards the 350cid V8 engine sourced from a 1985 Chevrolet Blazer and connected to a 700R4 4-speed automatic transmission.

The odometer shows 7,200 miles, although true chassis mileage is unknown.

This Woody’s auction ends July 15 at 12:00 p.m. PDT.

Pick of the Day: 1955 Ford Fairlane Victoria named Buck

fordford
The Fairlane in a motel scene that could have come straight from 1955

Meet Buck, the 1955 Ford Fairlane Victoria named after its two-tone paint scheme of Buckskin Brown and Snowshoe White.  The Pick of the Day, Buck is offered for sale on ClassicCars.com by a private seller in Dallas, Texas.

“Tri-Five” 1955-1957 Chevrolets are notoriously among the most widely recognized of classic cars, while Ford models of the same era have remained in relative obscurity.  Ford appeared to be trying hard to gain market share any way that it could; the 1955-56 Fords were offered in a remarkable nine different body styles spanning sedans, hardtops, convertibles and station wagons.  The hierarchy from entry-level to top-drawer consisted of Mainline, Customline and Fairlane.

This ’55 Fairlane Victoria hardtop has a 3-speed, column-shifted transmission linked with its 272cid Y-Block V8 engine.  Buck’s listing, or biography as it were, indicates that the odometer reading of 31,000 miles could very well be the actual mileage of the car given its original cosmetic and mechanical condition.  The owner refers to the Ford as “a smooth, reliable ride every time,” and says that it delivers a “pleasurable driving experience.”

The seller goes on to emphasize that the overdrive works well and that the car is a solid cruiser with a nice rumble from the exhaust system.  Everything on the dashboard, even the vintage five-button radio, is said to be fully functional.  The electrical system has been upgraded to 12 volts and new wide whitewalls (including the spare tire) were installed in July 2019.

“I love this car and have taken special care of it,” the seller says in the ad.

That pride of ownership is evident not only in the description but in the creative mid-century photo opportunities sought out for the listing.  A six-minute YouTube video accompanies the listing and showcases the Ford’s condition.

The seller is asking $30,000 to make Buck part of your family.

Here’s The 2021 Ford Bronco Before You’re Supposed To See It

Screenshot: Bronco6G

After waiting what feels like years to see the final iteration of the production Bronco, it has been leaked just days before Ford’s official launch of the off-roader. On Friday afternoon this photograph of the Bronco, which appears to be official Ford marketing collateral, was posted to the Bronco6G forum by Administrator Doug. While it’s partially obscured by the blitz of sand spun up by the front wheels in this picture, there are a few things we can tell in this photograph. Let’s break it down.

First, you’ll notice that the passenger door isn’t on. Nor are the various roof panels. This confirms that the Ford is aiming squarely at Jeep’s Wrangler models with the Bronco.

The front of the truck is clearly inspired by the first gen Bronco in a brilliant wave of future nostalgia.

This is clearly the off-roady version of the Bronco, which features big chunky dirt tires. It’s got enough room inbetween tread blocks to really fling that sand, which is going to make Anakin Skywalker seriously perturbed.

Presumably we’ll see even more of the new Bronco this weekend as we get closer to the official unveil. Ford has been dragging this launch out so long, I wouldn’t be surprised to find out that this leak was an official way to get another headline out of us. But, you guys just love seeing this thing, so here it is. PR be damned.

2021 Ford Bronco 7-Speed Manual May Be A 6-Speed With A Low Gear: Report

Truck YeahThe trucks are good!

A seven-speed manual transmission for the upcoming 2021 Ford Bronco has been reported by a tipster with access to exclusive images of the new truck’s center stack, giving more evidence that Ford really is taking the fight all the way to Jeep’s doorstep. It’s what everybody wanted.

I can’t share the images here, but you can go take a gander for yourself over at The Fast Lane Car. Their tipster sent in an image of what appears to be an as-of-yet unreleased Ford infotainment center stack. The large screen appears to be approximately 12 inches, and it sits above a familiar F-150 button stack.

Here’s more from TFLC:

Our source did provide a clear enough image to make out some of the options you’ll get with the 2021 Ford Bronco by way of the buttons on the center stack. Immediately below the infotainment display (showing what is most likely Ford’s SYNC 4 system), there are buttons for a 360-degree camera system, automatic stop/start and a button to disable the parking sensors. Dual-zone climate control also makes an appearance, as does heated seats. However, ventilated seat buttons aren’t here as they were on the F-150. There does appear to be some blank space on either side for a button, so it may just not be an option on this trim level.

More important than the buttons you’ll be pushing is the TFLC source’s claims about the supposed seven-speed manual transmission fitted on the new Bronco. The prospect of a seven-speed in the new Bronco has been rumored since as far back as fall of 2018.

It may actually be a transmission with six forward gears, and a low gear for crawling, according to the tip. Unfortunately, their tipster didn’t get an image of that somehow, so we have to consider taking their word for it still.

This information does match a PowerPoint slide from the manufacturer of the Bronco’s transmission, Magna, which describes a manual transmission capable of different arrangements, including one with a seventh “crawler” gear. Its standard torque rating is up to 443 lb-ft.

Autoblog points out it could potentially pair well with the Bronco’s rumored 325 horsepower, 400 lb-ft of torque 2.7-liter twin-turbo EcoBoost V6 powertrain from the F-150 pickup.

The new TFLC report also indicates Ford may offer two different tire options, one narrow for street and a larger profile for off-roading, supposedly measuring 255-millimetres and 285-millimetres respectively. The larger width would match the tires on the 17-inch wheels available with the Jeep Wrangler Rubicon, TFLC points out.

Ford planned on already revealing its Wrangler-wrangling full-size Bronco, but the current state of the world has kicked that down the road. Ford previously said the reveal would still take place this spring, and to stay tuned for a date announcement.
